Movie Review: The Crazies(2010)

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Directed by Breck Eisner
Starring Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Danielle Panabaker, Joe Anderson.
Rated R
Release date: February 26, 2010

When I was first told about The Crazies, I thought it was a remake of the 1973 film by George A. Romero. But this movie I doubt is ever been as much fun. The film starts with a military plane carrying a biological weapon crashing in a town named Iowa. The people get infected by the biological weapon and hence they make a run for their lives.

The Crazies isn’t movie about zombies but somehow it more or less tends to be a zombie movie. The only difference is that here there is no faceless guy killing people, instead it is your own friends, relatives and others you know infected by the biological weapon causing them to act out of their minds. Such a kind of tragedy the level of emotion built into this zombie (and zombie-like)movie is heart taking. Well here there are no bad guys. Your relatives are the one who threaten you, try to kill them, etc etc. No love lost at the end, as usual. The infected could very well be your wife, friends or children. The survival aspect is that you will have to kill someof them to stop them from killing you, eating your brains, chewing your face off or lighting you on fire.

Good horror movies always relate well with their time period. Romero knows this. He has mixed horror with elements of social commentary. The Crazies is well paced and has earnedrespect of its predecessor. Rather than reinventing the genre, he has hit all the right note all at once. Not bad from the guy who made Sahara.

Movie Review: Alice in the Wonderland(3D)

Directed by Tim Burton
Starring Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter
Rated PG
Release date: March 5, 2010

Well the much awaited Alice in the Wonderland(3D) has finally hit the screens. In this short span the movie has produced quite a buzz around itself. Tim Burton has spent most of his past filling up his resume with highly successful movies, but this time Tim Burton has not reached the viewers expectations. Though there is use of hitech technology, it still fails to gain reputation for the movie.

3D has not been used effectively in the movie. The stuff for which 3D has been used is nothing more than to show a sequence of things thrown at the screen. Not because it adds depth to the story, but so that people in the back row will ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’. Even the quieter moments weren’t impressive. The 3D was supposed to be the selling point for the movie. When one of the main selling points of a movie ends then it just takes us out of the movie. Therefore I wuold have gone for a 2D movie.

Casting stars like Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter seems to be a big thing. But the truth is that they have not been able to add much colour to the movie. Johnny Depp seems to be doing more or less the same acting these days for all his movies(aye aye Captain….).

Though I would say that Burton’s adaptation of novel till date is best. But a little better use of 3D and a more open role for the actors may have helped  the movie achieve more. This movie will be great mostly for young audience who will enjoy the visual effects as well as Alice’s adventure.
