‘Valentine’s Day’ Grosses $52.4 M in Opening Weekend
Monday, February 15th, 2010Warner Bros romantic comedy flick ‘Valentines Day’ has grossed $52.4 Million by Sunday. Valentines Day has dominated the Hollywood box office. The movie features famous Hollywood actors such as Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Garner, Shirley Maclaine, George Lopez, Jessica Biel and Jamie Foxx.
‘Valentines Day’ opened last Friday with direct competition to movies like ‘Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightening Thief’ and ‘The Wolfman’.However, it was the romantic flick that raked in the moolah at theaters. Obviously, the name ‘Valentines Day’ releasing around Valentines day may have had something to do with the response. The release date could not have been any better. Most market analysts claim that young women are their biggest source of income for romantic comedy film such as Valentines Day – especially since they become repeat watchers as well.
The most toughest competition were given by ‘Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightening Thief’ which grossed $31.1 million and ‘The Wolfman’ which grossed the third highest this Valentines weekend.
The other movies which did not make as much waves as Valentines Day were ‘Tooth Fairy’ ( $5.6 million), ‘From Paris with love’ ($4.7 million), ‘The edge of darkness’ ($4 million), ‘Crazy Heart’ ($4 million) and ‘When in Rome’ ($3.4 million).
The resounding opening grossed by ‘Valentines Day’ is in sharp contrast to the critics rating at Rotten Tomatoes- as only 15% of the critics liked the movie. The only success mantra which was perhaps employed was the title of the film and its time of release, which guaranteed that ‘Valentines Day’ would be a successful movie.
