Movie Review- Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Based on the book by Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, is reminiscent of Harry Potter. However, instead of wizards and magic, our hero Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) finds himself in the midst of Greek mythology.

Percy is joined by his two young co-stars including Athena’s warrior-daughter Annabeth (Alexandria Daddario) on what is essentially a road trip to confront Hades. Along the way all kind of interesting adventures ensue where our young hero meets a variety of famous mythological figures including Uma Thurman who plays a stunning Medusa.

Although I was vaguely reminded of the story of Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey it’s doubtful that the kids that this film is aimed at will make that connection, and nor should they.  The mythological world of the Greek Gods is occasionally used as a movie backdrop and the figures, including Medusa and a Centaur, played by Pierce Brosnan, are always entertaining for kids as they are so fantastic. All in all this is a very enjoyable movie for the whole family even if the plot is a little confusing at times.

Matt Damon

Clint Eastwood (Changeling), one of the most celebrated actor-directors of Hollywood, is all set to

cast Matt Damon and Bryce Dallas Howard in his next movie, ‘Hereafter’. ‘Hereafter’ is a

psychological thriller and is being eagerly awaited by Eastwood and Daemon fans (cumulatively, that covers half of the global English movie-watchers), though release dates will be somewhere in December next year.

According to Matt Damon, Clint Eastwood always hires the best people possible for his films. Well, very modest of Matt Damon.

Bryce Dallas Howard is the daughter of veteran director Ron Howard (Cindrella Man, The DaVinci Code), and is one of the fastest growing hollywood actresses, all set to make a big mark in the global film industry.

Matt Damon (the Bourne trilogy, Goodwill Hunting) and Bryce Dallas Howard (The Village, Spider-man3, Terminator Salvation) will surely make a decent couple on screen. Whether or not they make it bigger than just ‘decent’, is yet to be seen. And Mr. Eastwood, people are waiting more eagerly than you could ever imagine.
