Movie Review- Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief
Thursday, February 25th, 2010
Based on the book by Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, is reminiscent of Harry Potter. However, instead of wizards and magic, our hero Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) finds himself in the midst of Greek mythology.
Percy is joined by his two young co-stars including Athena’s warrior-daughter Annabeth (Alexandria Daddario) on what is essentially a road trip to confront Hades. Along the way all kind of interesting adventures ensue where our young hero meets a variety of famous mythological figures including Uma Thurman who plays a stunning Medusa.
Although I was vaguely reminded of the story of Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey it’s doubtful that the kids that this film is aimed at will make that connection, and nor should they. The mythological world of the Greek Gods is occasionally used as a movie backdrop and the figures, including Medusa and a Centaur, played by Pierce Brosnan, are always entertaining for kids as they are so fantastic. All in all this is a very enjoyable movie for the whole family even if the plot is a little confusing at times.
